You don't need to shade the entire machine.

A package unit combines several HVAC components inside one large cabinet. Only one section contains the outdoor cooling coils and condenser fan—the part that draws in outside air and removes heat.

We are trying to shade the part of the machine that is actually doing the cooling.

  • Condenser side: the cooling section

Outside air is pulled through the louvers and across the condenser coils. The fan then exhausts that air out through the top.

This is the section that removes heat, so this is the section we want to shade.

  • Equipment side: the protected section

The compressor, blower, electrical components, and ductwork sit behind solid, insulated cabinet panels.

This section is already enclosed and protected by the unit’s structure.

  • The correct AC Shade is sized for the condenser section—not the full length of the package unit.

    • A smaller shade can still cover the important cooling area.
    • The open center remains positioned over the condenser fan so exhaust air can leave freely.
    • Shade extending over the enclosed equipment compartment is helpful, but it is only bonus coverage.
    • Covering the entire cabinet is not necessary to achieve the goal.
  • For larger package units:

Even a smaller AC Shade can provide meaningful protection over the condenser section. Because the AC36 is our largest size at the same price, we often recommend it to maximize practical coverage.

  • Position the open center

Place the shade over the condenser fan and cooling-coil section.

  • Secure the condenser-side corners

Use the included bungee cords wherever the cabinet design provides a practical attachment point.

  • Secure any remaining corner

A simple strap or heavy-duty outdoor hook-and-loop fastener can be used over the enclosed equipment section when needed.

Not sure which section to shade?
