Why Do So Many Sources Say 10% While Google Repeats 1–2%?

The Public Record on AC Shading Is Much Bigger Than One Number

If you've searched "Should I shade my AC?", you've probably seen the same number repeated again and again.

Google's AI summaries frequently mention that shading an outdoor air conditioner only improves efficiency by about 1–2%.

At first glance, that sounds like the issue has been settled.

But when we started researching the subject, we found something surprising.

The public record tells a much larger story.

Government agencies.

State utilities.

Consumer organizations.

HVAC contractors.

Manufacturers.

Energy companies.

For decades, many of these organizations have discussed benefits around 10%, while others have made even larger claims under certain conditions.

So naturally, one question comes to mind:

Why does one number dominate the conversation when so many public sources have published something different?


Where Does the 1–2% Number Come From?

The number most often repeated today traces back to a well-known study conducted by the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC).

That study looked at one specific approach to condenser shading under specific conditions and found relatively small measured savings.

It has become one of the most frequently cited pieces of research whenever AC shading is discussed.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with citing that study.

The question is whether it should be treated as the only meaningful piece of evidence.


The Public Record Is Much Larger

As we continued researching, we found that numerous organizations have published guidance suggesting much larger potential benefits under certain conditions.

Here are just a few examples.

These are not AC Shade claims.

These are publicly available statements made by other organizations over many years.


Some Sources Go Even Further

Interestingly, not every source stops around 10%.

Some HVAC companies and other public sources have published much larger numbers.

Examples include:

  • Total Comfort Cooling & Heating – claims of up to 30% lower cooling costs.
  • Ricky Heath Plumbing – nearly 30% greater annual energy efficiency.
  • Older Bob Vila references quoted by Direct Energy mentioning dramatically larger reductions.
  • Various homeowner demonstrations and field reports showing significantly larger improvements in specific situations.

Some of these claims involve shading the condenser itself.

Others involve landscaping, shade trees, or reducing the cooling load of the entire home.

That distinction matters.

Different studies are not necessarily measuring the same thing.


Why Are The Numbers So Different?

This may be the most important question.

Not all shading is the same.

Different sources examine:

  • Different climates
  • Different condenser designs
  • Different installation methods
  • Different amounts of shade
  • Different airflow conditions
  • Different performance measurements

Some evaluate only the condenser.

Others include surrounding landscaping.

Some measure compressor power.

Others measure total household cooling energy.

Others focus on operating conditions rather than energy savings alone.

Comparing every one of these studies as though they measured the exact same thing oversimplifies a much more complex topic.


What About Manufacturers?

Interestingly, manufacturers rarely focus on percentages.

Instead, they consistently discuss topics such as:

  • avoiding prolonged direct sunlight
  • considering shade during equipment placement
  • maintaining unrestricted airflow
  • preventing hot-air recirculation

That is remarkably consistent across many manufacturers.

Rather than debating one specific percentage, manufacturers tend to focus on proper installation and airflow.

The Real Conversation Isn't About One Number

After reviewing decades of publicly available information, one thing becomes clear.

The discussion surrounding AC shading has become much more simplified than the available evidence suggests.

One frequently repeated number has become the default answer.

Meanwhile, dozens of public sources continue to reference different figures, different testing methods, and different conclusions.

That doesn't automatically make every larger claim correct.

But it also doesn't justify treating one limited experimental result as the final answer for every type of AC shading.


Perhaps We're Asking the Wrong Question

Instead of asking:

"Does AC shading save 1% or 10%?"

Perhaps we should be asking:

  • What type of shade?
  • Installed how?
  • Under what climate?
  • With what airflow?
  • Measuring what outcome?

Those questions are far more useful than assuming every shading method performs the same.
